Since 1988, the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) has invited extraordinary teachers to participate in the Sarah D. Barder Fellowship Program. Sarah D. Barder was an educator, philanthropist, parent, and fan of CTY who endowed this program for talented teachers. Today the program includes an annual conference for those teachers who have been selected by CTY based on student nominations and fellow applications. New and veteran fellows are invited to an annual conference to interact with one another and participate in a robust program of professional development centered around a theme. To date, nearly 400 outstanding teachers and administrators have been inducted into the fellowship program.

CTY

The Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth is a nonprofit dedicated to identifying and developing the talents of academically advanced pre-college students around the world. We serve bright learners and their families through our research, advocacy, and counseling, as well as our signature gifted and talented summer, online, international, and family programs.

BECOMING A FELLOW

Each year, CTY students who live in California, Nevada, and Maryland and who enrolled in  a CTY summer program or online course are invited to nominate a teacher for recognition as an outstanding educator. Nominated teachers are then invited to apply for

the Sarah D. Barder Fellowship.  A selection committee reviews all applications and 8-10 teachers are selected for the award each year.

CONFERENCE

Each year,  fellows convene for the annual Sarah D. Barder conference. The conference honors incoming fellows, features speakers on a variety of timely educational topics, and allows all fellows to enjoy the camaraderie that has marked the program from its beginning. The location of the conference rotates each year between Northern California, Southern California, Nevada, and Maryland.
